What´s colourimetry ?
It's an instrumental technique which ultimate goal is to determine the absorption of visible light through a sample.
This sample can be a pure substance, a mixture or a specific solution.
What is the measurement of colourimeter ?
The colorimeter is made up of among other devices, a phototube charge of transforming a light signal into an electrical signal, this signal once amplified, is converted into digital data, that can be interpreted.
How are data represented ?
The L* axis (lightness) goes from 0 (black) to 100 (white). The other axes a* and b* represent variations between reddish-greenish and yellowish-blue, respectively. |
What is used for ?
A colourimeter is an instrument used for measuring colour, and compare it to another colour.
Characteristics and uses of a colourimeter:
Characteristics:
The colour measurement, in three variables: L, a, and b.
The colour comparison, setting the tolerance allowed by the costumer.
Uses:
The colour contrast of printed materials.
Saves time in searching of the colour tone.
Eliminates errors in the determination of colour.
Quality control.
Procedure and quality control:
A standard sample is measured with the colorimeter.
The colour is formulated with the software of the colorimeter.
Colour is produced and applied. After drying is measured with the colorimeter.
Colour is considered suitable when data are dE<0.5
Finally, brightness and appearance are compared to the standard.
