What are water coatings ?
Consist of one-pack coating system.
These coatings use water as solvent although small amounts of organic solvents, called coalescent, support the formation of the film.
Main differences from the solvent coatings:
A higher price.
Low solid content.
Lower chemical resistance, but similar to nitrocellulosics.
Slower drying.
More ecological.
Solvents are not need or to reduce or to clean the equipments.
Types:
Outdoor coatings: the most used.
Floor coatings.
Furniture coatings.
All products can be:
Transparent.
Coloured.
Uses:
Any type of wood can be varnish but there are many woods (oak, chestnut, etc) which contain tannins.
Tannins are water soluble, so when varnished wood, the tannins can be dissolved in the film. If sunlight strikes the wood, the film can acquire brown tones.
When suspected the presence of tannins in the wood, apply anti-tannins primer that prevents tannins from migrating to the film.
